Slit-like loops are the consequence of the hook crushing the row beneath the one you work on. When a new stitch is made you should be hovering over the row beneath, rather then leaning on the previous row. Once you avoid this habit, your loops will start looking round and pretty, I’ve seen this correction work numerous times..

“My tube became hard and it doesn’t stretch when I flatten it”

Hard tubes can still develop even if you work with the correct wire gauge and softness. It is the consequence of loops being too tightly squeezed together without space between the loops. The work becomes dense and looses its flexibility—this being said, some designs benefit from the effect, while others suffer—the key thing is to understand why it happens, and learn to control it. Enlarge the space between the stitches by pulling the wire further away from the previous loop.
